A hydrobiology sector has been created in the Baikal branch of VNIRO

In 2024, the hydrobiology sector was created as an independent division in the Baikal branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO). It included experienced specialists - candidates of science, postgraduate students and masters who study pelagic and benthic invertebrates.

The specialists of the hydrobiology sector have extensive experience. The total volume of collected and processed material over the past five years is more than 3,000 samples. The network of stations where hydrobiologists conduct research covers the shallow (coastal-sor) zone of Lake Baikal, lake systems and watercourses of Transbaikalia and Pribaikalia, a cascade of reservoirs on the Angara River.

The most significant studies of the branch's hydrobiologists over the past five years are related to the Federal Project "Preservation of Lake Baikal" of the national project "Ecology" (2021-2023), studies of the Kharanorskoye Reservoir in the Trans-Baikal Territory (2022), the Aldan River in Yakutia (2021) and the Vikhoreva River in the Irkutsk Region (2020) supervised by the central institute VNIRO.

In the near future, work is planned to determine the influence of trophic conditions on the distribution of omul in Lake Baikal using the new research vessel "Vikenty Zaitsev".

The new division of the Baikal branch has a reliable scientific foundation and prospects for further interesting studies of aquatic biological resources in the region.
