Assessment of readiness for downstream migration of hatchery juvenile Chinook and Sockeye salmon

From May 4 to 14, leading specialist of the Department of Anadromous Fish of Russia of the Central Institute of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) Shulgina E.V. conducted research at the Malkinsky salmon fish hatchery of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Glavrybvod" (Klyuchevka River basin, Kamchatka Krai).

Warm-water rearing of juveniles at the hatchery using geothermal waters allows for the release of yearling smolts of Chinook and Sockeye salmon.

During the research, work was carried out to assess the readiness of hatchery juvenile Chinook and Sockeye salmon for a marine lifestyle before release, including studying the hormonal and physiological parameters of the released juveniles when transplanted into sea water and assessing their viability depending on the feed used during rearing.

Research at the Malkinsky salmon hatchery in 2025 will help analyze the impact of various feed formulations used at the enterprise on the physiological state and success of smoltification of young Pacific salmon.
