Assessment of the state and impact of recreational fishing on aquatic bioresources of the Altai Territory

From January 24 to 25, specialists from the Altai branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) carried out an expedition to the Ob River within the boundaries of the Shelabolikha District of the Altai Territory in order to assess the visitation of the studied section of the watercourse by amateur fishermen in the winter.

Material was collected on the quantitative and species composition of fishermen's catches with the conduct of test fishing with amateur fishing gear.

Underwater video filming of the fishing spot was carried out using an underwater video surveillance system to obtain information about the bottom relief, the presence of fish, its quantity, species composition and spatial distribution. The catches of amateur fishermen included roach, ruff and bream. All caught bream specimens were of non-commercial size. The most popular fishing gear among fishermen is winter fishing rods, and the most commonly used baits are baited jigs, with bloodworms, gammarus or maggots, and baitless ones.

To study the food supply of the river section under study, hydrobiological samples were collected and sent to the institute's laboratories for further office processing.

An annual assessment of the volume of fish caught by amateur fishermen on the Ob River within the Altai Territory will allow us to analyze the annual dynamics of the catch, taking into account the hydrological and meteorological conditions of observation. The results obtained will be used to develop recommendations for amending the Fishing Rules for the West Siberian Fishery Basin.
