At the Azov-Black Sea branch of VNIRO, young scientists are conducting dissertation research

Currently, the state of sturgeon populations and the problems of their conservation are particularly relevant, since due to excessive exploitation and loss of natural spawning grounds, sturgeons are almost on the verge of extinction.

Their natural populations are replenished mainly through artificial reproduction. In this regard, monitoring the genetic structure of sturgeon populations and their diversity is the highest priority task facing science.

Scientists from the Azov-Black Sea branch of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) decided to solve the mystery of the genetic variability of sturgeon fish species in the Azov-Black Sea basin. This topic is the subject of the dissertation work of a young specialist of the branch - Alimova A.Sh.

During the dissertation research, it is planned to use modern DNA markers to assess the dynamics of the genetic diversity of natural populations of sturgeon fish species in the Azov-Black Sea basin over the past 25 years. This period is characterized by the lowest number of natural populations and small volumes of juvenile releases by sturgeon hatcheries.

The obtained research results are supposed to be compared with the genetic profiles of sturgeon producers from broodstocks of sturgeon hatcheries. Based on the results of the analysis, recommendations will be given on maintaining the natural heterogeneity (heterogeneity) of broodstocks by creating optimal pairs of crosses.

These studies will allow us to evaluate not only the contribution of many years of work of artificial reproduction programs, but also the current state of the genetic structure of natural populations of sturgeon species.
