Comprehensive studies of coastal biocenoses of the Barents and White Seas have been completed

Scientists from the Polar Branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) spent 19 days on a research cruise on the research vessel “Professor Boyko”, where they conducted comprehensive studies of the coastal biocenoses of the Barents and White Seas.

This survey is devoted to studies of the biology and distribution of the Kamchatka crab, its habitat, as well as the Icelandic scallop in the White Sea.

The work area covers a vast area of water in the territorial and internal sea waters of Russia, including the coastal zone of the Murmansk coast from the Varanger Fjord to Cape Svyatoy Nos and the Kanin Peninsula, the White Sea Funnel.

The specialists studied the characteristics and patterns of the spatial distribution of the Kamchatka crab, aspects of its biology (size and sex composition, maturity, fertility, condition of the integument, diseases and parasite fauna), and collected material for genetic samples. They carried out comprehensive oceanographic and hydrobiological studies, observed the distribution and number of marine mammals, and collected materials to assess the pollution of the habitat.

The results of the expedition after further data processing will be used in preparing recommendations in the field of fishery regulation and forecasts of varying lead times.
