Day without networks

Specialists from the Krasnoyarsk branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) took part in the All-Russian Day without Nets campaign, which took place on May 16.

A raid was conducted together with the Yenisei Territorial Administration of the Federal Agency for Fisheries to search for and remove illegally installed gear for catching aquatic bioresources (nets, traps) in the Yenisei River.

“Modern nets are almost invisible in the water, in addition to visual inspection of backwaters suitable for installing nets, we used a grappling hook to search for abandoned fishing gear. Illegally used net fishing gear during the spawning ban on the Yenisei certainly has a negative impact on the ichthyofauna. In addition to the removal of fish by poachers, our rivers also suffer from pollution, including abandoned or lost fishing gear. Our common efforts are aimed at combating the “consumer” attitude towards nature, because only together can we preserve our great river and its inhabitants for future generations,” says Dmitry Krivolutsky, head of the ichthyology laboratory.

During the raid, 25 nets with a total length of more than 1 km were found and seized by joint efforts. Live fish were released. Also during the campaign, conversations were held with amateur fishermen, specialists reminded them of the current fishing rules.
