Over the past three years, the branch has been releasing young whitefish into the Curonian Lagoon of the Baltic Sea both to compensate for the damage caused by the economic activities of organizations engaged in construction and melioration activities in the region and to replenish the natural population of a valuable commercial species to preserve the biological diversity of the reservoir, ensure stabilization of the whitefish population and sustainable fishing.
In addition to work on the artificial reproduction of young whitefish, specialists from the aquaculture and freshwater reservoirs sector carry out applied research work at the fish farm. Morphological, physiological, hematological, ichthyopathological and microbiological indicators of the grown whitefish are studied, the biotechnical process is improved to improve the quality of the young and minimize losses during its cultivation. Other experimental studies are also carried out.
Thus, last year, work was carried out on the artificial reproduction of brown trout, one of the promising objects of fish farming, industrial and amateur fishing in the Kaliningrad region. A significant feature of brown trout is that it is capable of changing its lifestyle during ontogenesis. Anadromous fish can settle in the river after spawning and vice versa, the brook sedentary form is capable of going to sea and radically changing its habitat, food objects, growth rates, etc.
As a result of the work done, a preliminary conclusion was made that the possibility of artificial reproduction of brown trout in the Kaliningrad region is real, further experimental work is required. In addition, it is necessary to carry out regular monitoring of rivers potentially suitable for brown trout habitation. In the future, it is possible to form a small broodstock in RAS for longer-term studies.
