Interim results of the work of NIS "Vilnius"

The research vessel (NIS) of the Polar Branch of VNIRO MK-0102 Vilnius continues its work in the Barents Sea.

Currently, together with two NIS of the Institute of Marine Research (Bergen, Norway) – "Kronprins Haakon" and "Johan Hjort", NIS "Vilnius" participates in the annual winter joint Russian-Norwegian trawl-acoustic survey of fish in the Barents Sea, the results of which will be used to assess the state of cod and haddock stocks and the forecast of their catch.

During the two weeks of operation of the scientific vessel of the Polar Branch of VNIRO in the exclusive economic zone of the Russian Federation, about a quarter of the planned work was completed.

Of particular note is the discovery by scientists at the Finmarken Bank of "head" shoals of capelin migrating to spawning sites.

At the end of January, for the first time this year, the scientific group of NIS "Vilnius" performed oceanographic observations on the century–old section "Kola Meridian" - 6 of them were made in the Norwegian economic zone. The heat content of the active layer of the sea (0-200 m) was previously increased compared to the average long-term level.
Now research is continuing in the southeastern part of the sea.
