Meeting of experts to discuss joint expeditionary research of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Ghana

On February 13, the Atlantic Branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) hosted a video conference between experts from the branch and the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquaculture Development of the Republic of Ghana (MoFAD) to agree on a preliminary program of joint research in the Ghana zone during the Great African Expedition of 2024-2026.

The Russian delegation was headed by Deputy Director and Head of the Atlantic Branch Konstantin Bandurin. The delegation of the Republic of Ghana was led by Eunice Ofoli Anum, Deputy Director of the Research, Statistics and Information Department of MoFAD.

During the meeting, scientists from the two countries discussed the objectives of the upcoming joint expeditionary research work.

The Russian side proposed to carry out two surveys in the waters of the Republic of Ghana in February - April 2025 on the Russian research vessel Atlantis:

  • A trawl-acoustic survey to assess the biomass of small pelagic fish with the collection of data on their habitat;
  • An accounting trawl survey to assess the biomass of demersal aquatic biological resources.

The representatives of Ghana expressed great interest in carrying out the proposed studies, generally approving the program presented by the Russian side.

Ghana does not have its own research vessels, which limits the possibilities for observing the marine ecosystem. The research work proposed by the Russian side will be able to contribute to improving the monitoring of the marine environment, assessing fish stocks and analyzing the impact of climate change.

The parties agreed to discuss several clarifying questions on the details of the survey in the working order.

The meeting of scientists from Ghana and Russia took place in an exceptionally friendly and benevolent atmosphere.

Reference: Fisheries research in Ghana is an important area for ensuring sustainable development of fisheries, which plays a key role in the country's economic and food security. Marine fisheries account for about 80% of the total catch, including species such as sardines and anchovies.
