Monitoring of northern shrimp fishery in winter 2025 completed

Since the beginning of 2025, specialists from the Magadan branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) have been monitoring the northern shrimp fishery in the waters around Magadan.

“This type of invertebrate has been fished by domestic fishermen since 1999, and all this time, science has been monitoring the state of northern shrimp stocks. The joint efforts of fishermen and scientists have made Magadan shrimp recognizable and accessible to consumers in all corners of our country,” commented Evgeny Metelev, head of the Magadan branch of VNIRO.

Considering that in recent years, the main shrimp fishery in the northern Sea of Okhotsk has been carried out in the first half of the year, specialists from the branch begin research as early as possible, with the departure of vessels for fishing.

Despite the difficult meteorological conditions during the monitoring period - storms and ice, this year high-quality fishery-statistical and biological information was obtained, which will allow us to reliably assess the current state of the shrimp stock and make a forecast of its change in the near future.

The materials obtained during the monitoring work will be used to prepare forecasts of the total permissible catches of shrimp in the northern North-Okhotsk subzone, as well as in the development of recommendations for the rational exploitation of its stocks.
