Monitoring of recreational fishing in water bodies of the Astrakhan region

By mid-March, the water bodies of the Astrakhan region were free of ice, and amateur fishermen went fishing. A mass arrival of amateur fishermen who arrived at the water bodies of the region from other regions of Russia was noted already in the third decade of March.

Specialists of the Volga-Caspian branch of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) continued monitoring amateur fishing in the water bodies of the Astrakhan region in April. A census of amateur fishermen, visual observations of the intensity of amateur fishing and experimental fishing were carried out, while the species and size-weight composition of the caught fish were determined, and the spawning situation was analyzed.

The catches of amateur fishermen included white bream, bream, freshwater perch, pike perch, zander, pike, asp, silver carp, carp, with white bream, perch and pike perch dominating, and large ide were encountered singly. The main fishing gear of amateur fishermen was a spinning rod and a bottom fishing rod with a rod. In the monitoring areas in the waters of the western substeppe ilmens, crayfish were encountered, developed eggs were observed in females, and badyaga sponge was noted in the reservoirs. The obtained aquatic bioresources were released into the natural habitat after an incomplete biological analysis.

From April 1 to June 30, a ban on the extraction (catch) of crayfish for amateur fisheries is in effect. The time of mass spawning migrations and fish spawning is approaching – amateur fishermen must comply with the size and quantity restrictions on the fish they catch, established by the Fishing Rules, the ban on fishing in fish spawning grounds, in the interests of preserving and replenishing the populations of aquatic biological resources.
