On Sakhalin, the volumes of Pacific salmon catch in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug, Magadan Oblast and Primorsky Krai were discussed

On February 14, an interdepartmental meeting was held to discuss the volumes of the projected catch and strategies for fishing Pacific salmon in the Far Eastern fishery basin in 2025.

The meeting was held in a mixed mode - the director of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), Doctor of Economics Kirill Kolonchin, deputy director - head of the Pacific branch Alexey Baytalyuk and director of the Department of Anadromous Fish of Russia Olga Maznikova, who are on a working trip to the regions of the Far East, connected from the Sakhalin branch, and the rest of the participants in the videoconferencing mode from their regions. Scientists from VNIRO, the leadership of regional executive authorities and territorial administrations of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, as well as associations of fishing enterprises of the Far East took part in the meeting.

Opening the meeting, the director of VNIRO said that this format for discussing the volumes of the projected catch and fishing strategies has already become traditional. The VNIRO management travels around the Far Eastern regions where the salmon fishing season takes place, listens to strategies, regulatory measures, forecasts for the relevant regions. Then an open discussion takes place, during which proposals and recommendations are made. All these events help to take into account the opinions of all interested parties and achieve good results through coordinated joint work.

“All proposals will be heard. Some will be discussed at this site, some will be taken to Moscow by us, so that they can then be considered at the Far Eastern Scientific and Fishing Council. After discussion there, they will be approved by the Academic Council of the Central Institute of VNIRO and then put into practice. Accordingly, adjustments are possible based on the results of the spring survey and a number of other works that accompany the adoption of the Strategy,” said Kirill Kolonchin.

The presentations were made by the Director of Anadromous Fish of Russia Olga Maznikova, the Head of the Laboratory for the Study of Pacific Salmon and Prospective Fishery Objects of the Pacific Branch of VNIRO Evgeny Shevlyakov, and the Head of the Magadan Branch of VNIRO Evgeny Metelev.

The reports presented stated that the total volume of production (catch) of Pacific salmon in the Chukotka Autonomous Okrug for 2025 is recommended by scientists at almost 1.7 thousand tons and 360 tons of char (species of the genus Salvelinus). In the Magadan Region, the projected catch volume is determined at over 10 thousand tons of Pacific salmon and 525 tons of char (species of the genus Salvelinus). The share of Primorsky Krai is about 2.7 thousand tons of Pacific salmon. In general, for the regions of the Far East, the volume of Pacific salmon catch predicted by VNIRO scientists is 311 thousand tons.
