Release of young sterlet into the Sheksna River

Since 2014, at the initiative of the Vologda branch of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO), events for the artificial reproduction of rare and vulnerable fish species have been held in the region on an ongoing basis using funds from compensation measures for damage caused to aquatic bioresources by economic activities.

On July 28, another release of sterlet juveniles into the Sheksna River in the area of the urban-type settlement of Sheksna, Sheksninsky Municipal District of the Vologda Region, in the amount of 178 specimens, was carried out.

Specialists from the Department of State Control, Supervision and Fishery Protection for the Vologda Region of the North-West Territorial Administration of the Federal Agency for Fisheries and Oceanography, the Vologda Department of the Federal State Budgetary Institution "Sevzaprybvod", the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Resources of the Vologda Region and the Vologda branch of VNIRO took part in the work of the commission monitoring this event.

To successfully transfer the sterlet from the transport tank to the river, the water temperature and the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the Sheksna River were measured. After a visual assessment of the planting material and a recount of the numbers, the young were released into the water body. The release was successful, no fish were lost.
