The White Sea herring was selected from test catches. Mass measurements of fish were performed, some individuals were examined as part of a complete biological analysis. In addition, roe sacs were removed to determine the absolute and relative fecundity of the herring. Data on hydrological conditions were also collected, hydrochemical samples were taken, and marine mammals were observed in the waters of the Chupa Bay.
A feature of the beginning of the spring period of 2025 was a sharp warming, which contributed to the intensive approach of herring to the apex of the Chupa Bay for spawning. In the second half of April, the ice floe began to disintegrate in the bay.
Analysis of test catches showed that the biological characteristics of the White Sea herring corresponded to the average long-term indicators. The average length and weight of the herring were 18.5 cm and 51.3 g, respectively. The ratio of the number of males and females was 1:1. The feeding intensity was traditionally low for the spawning period.
In the area of the work on the ice, up to 5 bearded seals were noted.
The collected data will be used to assess the number of aquatic bioresources, prepare forecast materials, substantiate the raw material base of fisheries, and develop measures to regulate fisheries.
