The observer’s duties also included monitoring the vessel’s compliance with the “Conservation and Enforcement Measures” (fishing rules) adopted in this area.
In addition to ichthyological studies of halibut, the specialist studied the distribution of marine mammals and birds in the vessel’s operating areas, conducted a quantitative assessment and collected data on by-catch of vulnerable marine ecosystem indicator species, and performed a parasitological analysis of fish.
The data obtained indicate that the raw material base for the black halibut fishery in the research area is at a fairly high level. A comparative analysis of the size-mass structure, composition of catches and dynamics of the fishery indicates the stability of the commercial stock of black halibut in this area.

The biological resources of the Northwest Atlantic are an important raw material base for the Russian fishing fleet. This region in the Atlantic Ocean is considered one of the most productive areas of world fisheries.
After the cessation of regular surveys in the Northwest Atlantic, the Polar Branch of VNIRO organized monitoring of the raw material base of the fishery with the help of NAFO observers on fishing vessels, which collect commercial and biological information. The results of this work allow us to ensure the activities of domestic experts in NAFO, protecting the interests of Russia in this organization.
