Results of the second day of the International Fishing Forum

The second day of the V International Fisheries Forum and the Exhibition of the Fishing Industry, Seafood and Technologies (Global Fisheries Forum & Seafood Expo 2022) was marked by many interesting events.
The International Conference "Smart Aquaculture" was held, dedicated to the discussion of current challenges in the field of aquaculture, the solution of which requires a specialized scientific and technological approach. The head of the Department of Molecular Genetics of VNIRO Nikolay Muge told about the research of VNIRO scientists in the field of genomic breeding, which contributes to the creation of highly productive fish breeds for aquaculture. The perspective of scientists' work in this direction is illustrated by the fact that, according to the Decree of the Government of the Russian Federation, VNIRO has been awarded the status of a center for the formation of the national fish gene pool.

Also, within the framework of the conference dedicated to the development of the canned fish products market, Deputy Head of the Department for the Quality of Food Fish Products of VNIRO Lyubov Abramova spoke on the topic of falsification of canned fish and suggested possible solutions to this problem. Tatiana Ruleva, Head of the Laboratory of Thermal Preservation of hydrobionts of the Atlantic branch of VNIRO, reviewed the current strategies for the production of domestic canned fish in the interests of import substitution.

As part of the Forum, Kirill Kolonchin, Director of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography, gave a long interview to the Federal News Agency TASS. The key topics of the dialogue were the discussion of priority areas of research activities of VNIRO scientists.

"Like any organization whose activities involve the exploitation of the resource base, in our work we invariably follow the national interests of Russia. Comprehensive monitoring of the state of aquatic bioresources with the aim of their most efficient exploitation is the main goal of the large–scale Trans-European expedition of VNIRO scientists, which covers the main fisheries basins of the European part of Russia from Murmansk to Kerch and serves as a platform for internship for young specialists in branch science."

"In addition to the actualization of expeditionary research, the point of growth of our work is the expansion of the problems of scientific support for the functioning of the industry. A Center for Economic Research of Fisheries has been established on the basis of VNIRO. We train specialists in the study of the mechanisms of the fisheries economy in our graduate school, at the moment we are actively engaged in the formation of a doctoral council on this new, but in demand for the development of the industry specialty," said Kirill Kolonchin, Director of VNIRO.

At the end of the day, the Forum participants attended an award ceremony for young scientists of VNIRO and its branches, who actively participate in popularizing the achievements of branch science and professional navigation of schoolchildren and students.

The ceremony is timed to the 100th anniversary of the flag raising on the Perseus research vessel. The glorious history of Perseus, whose Arctic expeditions have formed a whole generation of talented scientists, and today inspires young people to bright scientific achievements.
