Scientific research on Kyma

In June-July of this year, the Northern Branch of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) conducted a study of aquatic bioresources on the Kyma River (Leshukonsky District of the Arkhangelsk Region).

The aim of the study was to assess spawning and nursery areas, determine the distribution densities of juvenile Atlantic salmon, clarify the composition of the ichthyofauna, and conduct hydrobiological studies.

The branch's specialists conducted control catches to determine the species composition of fish in the Kyma River, determined the areas of spawning and nursery areas and the density of distribution of juvenile Atlantic salmon, and collected hydrobiological samples. During the work, data were obtained on the size and weight characteristics, sex ratios, and maturity stages of the gonads of juvenile salmon, and biomaterial was collected for genetic analysis of juvenile Atlantic salmon and recording structures for office determination of the age of fish. The catches also included river perch, pike, grayling, and roach.

The collected material will be used to assess the abundance of aquatic bioresources, prepare forecast materials, substantiate the raw material base of fisheries, and develop measures to regulate fisheries.
