Scientists from the Sakhalin branch of VNIRO have returned from the northern latitudes

Specialists from the Sakhalin branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) took part in an expedition on the research vessel “Dmitry Peskov” with a group of specialists from the Pacific and Kamchatka branches of VNIRO.

The scientists conducted ichthyoplankton surveys to assess the current state of pollock stocks in the Pacific waters adjacent to the Kamchatka Peninsula and the northern Kuril Islands, in the southwestern part of the Bering Sea and off eastern Sakhalin.

During the expedition, oceanographic conditions in the work areas were studied, ichthyoplankton samples were collected, and information on the main biological indicators of pollock was obtained based on the results of control trawling.

Ichthyoplankton surveys during the spawning season are often complicated by severe ice conditions, so the information collected during monitoring of pollock resources and other commercial species in this area is very valuable.

Based on the analysis and processing of the collected materials, data will be obtained for further assessment of the quantitative distribution and abundance of developing eggs in the study areas. Information on the main biological indicators of pollock in trawl catches will also be obtained.

The materials obtained during the work will supplement the database available in the Sakhalin and Kamchatka branches. In the future, they can be used in monitoring and assessing the state of aquatic organism stocks in the area of the northern Kuril Islands, southern and northeastern Kamchatka, eastern Sakhalin, in particular, to predict the abundance of pollock in this area.
