Smallmouth smelt research completed in Eastern Kamchatka

Small-mouth smelt is a valuable commercial species for which a recommended catch volume is established.

Employees of the Kamchatka branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) annually monitor biological indicators and collect biostatistical material to assess the current state of the smelt population. In October–November, Oleg Frolov, an employee of the smelt and char sector, studied the state of small-mouth smelt stocks in the Ossora and Karaga bays (Karaginskaya fishery subzone), and performed a full biological analysis of 400 fish specimens. The length of smelt in Ossora Bay was within 13–20 cm, with an average body weight of 39 g. In Karaga Bay, smelt was represented by individuals 15–21 cm long, with an average body weight of 50 g.

In general, specialized experts note the good condition of the small-mouth smelt stock in the Karaginsky subzone, the development of the RV volumes as of the beginning of November 2024 was about 80%.
