Specialists from the Magadan branch of VNIRO are participating in monitoring the release of young Pacific salmon for pasture aquaculture

 

These young salmon – pink salmon, chum salmon and coho salmon – will return in due time from the vast expanses of the Pacific Ocean, as adult large fish, to give life to a new generation of salmon and delight the Kolyma fishermen with their catches.

 

Aquaculture group specialists of the Salmon Fish and Aquaculture Laboratory of the Magadan branch of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) regularly participate in the work of the Commission monitoring the work on the artificial reproduction of aquatic biological resources, together with representatives of other organizations subordinate to the Federal Agency for Fisheries and the Administration of the Magadan Region, traveling to the release sites to monitor the conditions and compliance with biological standards of artificially bred juvenile fish. In mid-July, the Commission, with the participation of branch specialists, monitored the release of chum salmon juveniles from the salmon fish farm (SFH) in the village of Takhtoyamsk. This enterprise is the only private organization in the Magadan Region that has been implementing a full fish farming cycle in the past few years - from catching Pacific salmon producers, keeping eggs and larvae in controlled conditions, to releasing salmon fry into rivers. Specialists of the Magadan branch positively assessed the biological characteristics of the released chum salmon juveniles and the conditions of the release reservoir.

 

It should be noted that the employees of the aquaculture group also carry out work to assess the efficiency of the work of salmon farms of all types of ownership, examining the otoliths of salmon at different stages of ontogenesis, the mass marking of which allows us to accurately determine the year, region and enterprise where the fish was grown.
