Specialists from the Middle Volga branch of VNIRO visited the rearing ponds of Russian sturgeon

At the end of this month, specialists from the Middle Volga branch of the State Research Center of the Russian Federation “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) took part in the work of the commission of the Volga-Caspian Territorial Administration of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, which monitors the implementation of work on the artificial reproduction of aquatic biological resources.

From June 23 to 25, a grading survey of young Russian sturgeon in nursery ponds was carried out at the Volgograd sturgeon fish hatchery. Monitoring the growth of fry is important for the timely detection of deviations in the development of fry. Based on the results of the observations, it is expected that yearlings of the planned weight and fatness will be obtained, which will ensure good wintering and intensive growth of sturgeon in the following years.

Simultaneously with the fry survey, observations were made of the hydrochemical regime of the ponds, temperature, water pH, oxygen content, carbon dioxide and other indicators. The current weather conditions in the Volgograd region and, in particular, in the Volga-Akhtuba floodplain area, where the nursery ponds are located, have a beneficial effect on the growth rates of young fish.

As a result of the work performed, 2,357,607 young Russian sturgeons with an average weight of 2.6 g were obtained from 17 nursery ponds.
