Study of muksun spawning grounds on the Ob River

Specialists from the Novosibirsk branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO), in the course of implementing the activities of the Comprehensive Program for Restoring Populations of Whitefish Species in the Ob-Irtysh Fishery Basin, as part of the task of monitoring the state of spawning grounds for these species, conducted a search for potential sites for the natural reproduction of muksun in the Middle Ob.

About 90 km of the river in the Tomsk, Kozhevnikovsky and Shegarsky districts of the Tomsk region were surveyed, the depths and nature of the soil were determined.

Four areas suitable for the natural reproduction of this species were identified. The noted areas are characterized by large-pebble soil and relatively high flow rates. The total area of potential spawning grounds is about 2.7 km².

The conducted studies will allow us to assess the current state of the spawning stock of muksun, which rises to the Middle Ob for reproduction.
