The Arctic is a territory of dialogue between science and amateur fishermen

On March 5, a working meeting of representatives of the Northern Branch of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO), the Northern Sea Territorial Administration of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, the Assembly of Deputies and the Administration of the Mezen Municipal District, the State Inspectorate for Small Vessels of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia with organizers of amateur fishing and amateur fishermen who traditionally fish in the rivers and lakes of the Mezen Municipal District of the Arkhangelsk Region was held in the city of Mezen.
 
The Chairman of the Assembly of Deputies of the Mezen Municipal District Mikhail Zhidkikh delivered a welcoming speech to the participants of the meeting. Irina Bulatova, Head of the Laboratory of Inland Water Bioresources, spoke about the state of aquatic bioresources of the Mezen River and lakes of the Mezen Municipal District of the Arkhangelsk Region. Deputy Head of the Branch Alexey Tortsev presented data on resource studies and monitoring observations on water bodies of the district, and also held a discussion on issues of amateur fishing.
 
The final part of the meeting included an open discussion of a wide range of problematic issues in fisheries and conservation of aquatic bioresources. The meeting was held in a working and constructive dialogue between representatives of science, the fishing community and government bodies.
 
In addition, the branch specialists additionally monitored amateur fishing on the Mezen River in winter. Fishermen are actively ice fishing for flounder and Asian smelt using hook fishing gear.
