As part of the visiting Collegium of the State Scientific Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO), which is taking place on May 28-29 in the hero city of Volgograd, a ceremonial event was held to assign the name of the war hero, front-line soldier, veteran of Labor, director of the Volgograd branch of GosNIORKh V.V. The event was attended by members of the VNIRO Collegium, employees of the Middle Volga branch, representatives of the Volgograd Region Administration headed by Deputy Governor Vasily Ivanov, university students and guests of the city.

Addressing the participants, Deputy Director of VNIRO Pavel Bagimov said that assigning names of people who have made a great contribution to the development of fisheries science has become a good tradition. New ocean-going vessels, Professor Anatoly Elizarov and Professor Pyotr Moiseyev, are being built, and a new research vessel, Vikenty Zaitsev, has been launched for work on Lake Baikal. Now the vessel conducting research on the Middle Volga has been named after the scientist, organizer, and hero of the Great Patriotic War Vasily Vasilyev.

Deputy Governor Vasily Ivanov emphasized that perpetuating the memory of front-line soldiers is of great importance for preserving the historical memory of the Great Victory, the people who defeated the hordes of invaders.

Head of the Middle Volga branch Efim Kozhurin reported on the great importance for employees and Volgograd residents of naming the research vessel after Vasily Vasilyev. He noted that the active use of the vessel for the comprehensive study of aquatic biological resources and their habitat, including state monitoring, will expand the array of scientific data necessary for the correct determination of total allowable catches and recommended production volumes for industrial fishing, which will almost certainly increase these figures.
