The work of AtlantNIRO scientific observers to the region of North-West Africa has ended

The work of scientific observers of the Atlantic branch of VNIRO on board the RTMKSm "Captain Bogomolov" of the Eridan company took place in the Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) of Mauritania and the Atlantic fishing zone of Morocco in April-September 2022.

The work of scientific observers is aimed at developing scientifically sound recommendations for the regulation and development of Russian fisheries carried out in oceanic areas. During the voyage, scientists collected data on the size of catches, species composition, size and weight structure, biological characteristics and habitat of harvested biological resources in order to obtain scientific materials for the forecast of total allowable catches and possible catch volumes for 2024.

The most productive month for fishing in the EEZ of Mauritania was July. The fleet operated mainly in the northern part of the area, mainly in the offshore zone. In the first half of the month, it was possible to maintain a satisfactory situation by catching migrating horse mackerel and mackerel, and in the second half, atypically stable and dense clusters of pelamids had a positive impact on the results of the fleet's work.

Russian vessels began work in the Morocco zone on August 6. The basis of the catches were West African horse mackerel, pelamida, mackerel and lihia. In general, fishing in the area of Morocco during the observation period developed in a favorable fishing environment. Russian vessels worked with a fairly high efficiency, producing an average of 110-120 tons of raw materials per day of fishing.

A detailed scientific report of the observers on the work done is currently being prepared. The obtained materials will be used to assess the state of small pelagic fish stocks in the Central-Eastern Atlantic using mathematical methods.
