Tyumen branch of VNIRO participates in career guidance for teenagers

All about valuable fish: scientists from the Tyumen branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) conducted an educational excursion for participants of the tourist and local history expedition "Native expanses". The meeting took place at the Volkovo research and production site, a production unit of the branch that contains the broodstock of valuable Siberian fish.

The children of the Tobolsk region began their acquaintance with the cage farm on the backwater of the mighty Irtysh with dizzying landscapes. The teenagers saw with their own eyes the scale of the largest scientific and production complex in the country for the reproduction of whitefish. Sergey Semenchenko, head of the innovative technologies group of the Tyumen branch of VNIRO, told how the cage farm began, what types of fish are kept in the cages, and what the main goal of scientists and fish farmers is, namely, the restoration of natural populations of valuable fish in the rivers of Siberia.

How does the birth of a new life occur? Another question that interested schoolchildren and teachers. Natalia Smeshlivaya, a leading researcher at the branch, explained the details of whitefish spawning, the process of collecting and obtaining caviar. The children were also shown how fish farmers keep track of water quality, for example, regularly measure its oxygen saturation level.

Another educational part of the excursion was a story about fish diseases. The schoolchildren learned that fish, like humans, are susceptible to various diseases. In addition, some species can not only get sick, but also be carriers of various human diseases. Ivan Taradanov, head of the molecular genetic analysis diagnostics laboratory, told the children and teachers how fish diseases are prevented at the cage farm.

At the end of the excursion, each participant was able to feel like a fish farmer and feed the fish living in the cages. "This is my first time at such a farm, and I really liked everything. It was interesting, especially watching the fish eat food, swimming up to you. I noted for myself that the work of fish farmers is very difficult, I found out where they study so that they can work here later,” shared her impressions 9th grade graduate Daryana.

The excursion to the cage farm impressed the novice researchers, some of the guys even wanted to connect their future with fish farming. The Tyumen branch of VNIRO regularly holds excursions and master classes for the younger generation. Communication with scientists charges young people with research projects, opening up new facets of knowledge.
