Ural scientists conducted expeditions to assess the state of the region's water resources

Specialists from the aquaculture laboratory of the Ural branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) conducted expeditions to the Shershnevskoye and Yuzhnouralskoye reservoirs (Chelyabinsk region), Polevskoye reservoir (Sverdlovsk region) and the Uvelka River to comprehensively assess aquatic biological resources (ABR) and their habitat.

The objects of the study were reservoirs used for water supply, recreation and amateur fishing.

In the Chelyabinsk region, the Shershnevskoye reservoir, characterized by high recreational pressure and requiring constant monitoring of water quality, the Yuzhnouralskoye reservoir, which is a cooling pond for the state district power plant and has a diverse species composition of fish, and the Uvelka River, which flows into the Yuzhnouralskoye reservoir and is important for spawning, were studied.

In the Sverdlovsk region, the Polevskoy Reservoir, located in the vicinity of the city of Polevskoy, plays an important role in maintaining the ecological balance of the region.

During the expeditions, ichthyological material was collected, physical and chemical parameters of water were measured, and hydrobiological samples (phyto- and zooplankton, zoobenthos) were taken to assess the state of the fish food supply and the species composition of hydrobionts.

The obtained research results will provide up-to-date information on the state of aquatic biological resources in the Ural region. The data will be used to monitor aquatic ecosystems, develop recommendations for fisheries and environmental protection, as well as to adjust the volumes of release of aquatic biological resources into the studied water bodies and prepare forecasts.
