Use of unmanned systems by the Magadan branch of VNIRO to support the salmon fishing season in 2024

In the first half of October, ichthyologists of the Magadan branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO), during expeditions to the upper reaches of the rivers of the Taui Bay, examined the spawning grounds of chum salmon and coho salmon. The work was carried out using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).

With the help of UAVs, hard-to-reach areas of the tributaries of the Ola (Lankovaya, Aboga) and Taui (Chelomdzha, Khuren, Kutana) rivers were explored. Materials were obtained to assess the filling and area of spawning grounds of late-stage chum salmon and coho salmon. In addition, in order to record the temperature regime in spawning mounds at the first stage of salmon ontogenesis, sensors were installed in model sections of the rivers.

The use of unmanned aerial systems by the Magadan branch to support the salmon fishing season in 2024 has reached a new level. During the fishing season, flights were carried out over the watercourses of the Tauiskaya Bay, from the Ola River to the Taui River, as well as over part of the small rivers of the Odyan Gulf. Using UAVs, 17 surveys were carried out lasting from one to several days.

Next year, it is planned to increase the UAV fleet of the Magadan branch, as well as improve the skills of employees to work with modern domestic unmanned aerial systems.
