The reservoirs of the Manych Cascade are an important water system in the South of Russia, which ensures the redistribution of water resources across the territory of four constituent entities of the Russian Federation in the Southern Federal District (Rostov Region, Stavropol and Krasnodar Territories, the Republic of Kalmykia). A complex water management complex has been formed on the basis of the reservoirs, including agricultural water supply, irrigated agriculture, fisheries, water transport, and recreation.
During the expedition, VNIRO scientists collected samples of phyto- and zooplankton, zoobenthos, water and soil samples for chemical analysis (water mineralization, determination of the content of oil products, heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants). The concentration of dissolved oxygen was also recorded and the pH of the water was measured at the sampling site.
The collected data will allow us to assess the current state of the habitat and the level of pollution of the studied water bodies. In addition, information on the state, distribution and abundance of food for fish and crustaceans in the reservoirs of the Manych Cascade and the Sal River in 2025 will be updated.
At present, the collected samples have been delivered to the specialized laboratories of the Azov-Black Sea branch of VNIRO for further office processing and subsequent analysis of the information obtained.
