In 2023–2024, scientists from the branch examined a unique area of the so-called “Makarov cold-water spot” formed by the waters of the Sea of Okhotsk flowing south of western Sakhalin.
The peculiarities of the oceanographic regime create the prerequisites for the existence of specific cold-water biota and the development of new species that differ from the warm-water Sea of Japan fauna from adjacent areas of the Tatar Strait shelf near southwestern Sakhalin.
A new genus and species of amphipods, Gurjanovometopa onenusica gen. nov., sp. nov., have been found and described in the sea coast of southwestern Sakhalin. It differs from other genera of the Stenothoidae family by its specific structure.
The new genus is named in memory of the outstanding Soviet carcinologist Evpraksia Fedorovna Guryanova. The species received the species name onenusica after the Onenusi River, which flows into the sea in the area of research.
