The beginning of Russian-Vietnamese cooperation in the field of fisheries development was laid in the sixties of the 20th century. Currently, the legal basis for cooperation is the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam on Cooperation in the Field of fisheries dated June 16, 1994, for the implementation of which a Mixed Russian-Vietnamese Commission was established.
The agreement of June 16, 1994 provides for cooperation in such areas as: conducting scientific research, improving fishing techniques, processing technologies for fish and other seafood, the development of aquaculture, including mariculture and industrial fish farming, the creation of joint ventures in various fields of fisheries, etc. Vietnam's direct partners are mainly enterprises and organizations of the fishing industry of the Far Eastern macroregion.
In October 2016, the Free Trade Agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and its member states, on the one hand, and Vietnam, on the other hand, entered into force on May 29, 2015. The agreement provides for the liberalization of trade, including in relation to fish and fish products.
