VNIRO scientists have conducted research on deep-sea crab species in the northern part of the Sea of Okhotsk

Specialists from the Magadan and Pacific branches of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) on the research vessel “Zodiac” completed scientific research on populations of commercial invertebrates in the North-Okhotsk subzone and the Central part of the Sea of Okhotsk.

In total, 48 counting stations were set up in the above-mentioned areas during the expedition at depths from 350 to 1000 m.

The main objects of the research were deep-sea crabs and craboids. Monitoring the aggregations of these aquatic organisms made it possible to obtain valuable information to justify the amount of commercial extraction in these areas. During the trap survey, data were obtained on the number, distribution features, size and mass characteristics of mature individuals of commercial invertebrates.

The collected materials will serve as the basis for preparing a forecast of the total allowable catch (TAC) of the crab, snow crab, and angulatus, as well as for developing recommendations for the rational exploitation of these species.

“In the coming days, the research vessel Zodiac will bunker fuel for the next stage of research in the North-Okhotsk subzone: searching for an additional raw material base of gastropods (trumpeters),” said the head of the Magadan branch, Evgeny Metelev.
