VNIRO specialists conducted large-scale research to study wintering pits in the upper reaches of the Ob River

From July 14 to 23 and from August 7 to 15, specialists from the Altai branch of the Russian State Research Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography” (VNIRO) carried out comprehensive work to collect materials on the Ob within the boundaries of the Altai Territory as part of the state monitoring of aquatic biological resources and their habitat.

The first stage involved rafting on the MMS along the Ob from the village of Lesnoye in the Biysk District to the village of Kalinovka in the Pervomaysky District, the length of the section was 255 km. At the second stage - from the city of Barnaul to the city of Kamen-na-Obi, the length of the section was 255 km.

Ichthyological and hydrobiological samples were collected in the studied areas, information was collected on the anthropogenic impact on aquatic biological resources and their habitat.

During the expeditionary research, water and air temperature, level fluctuations, water transparency, and dissolved oxygen content were monitored daily. The caught fish were subjected to full and partial (mass measurements) biological analysis. In addition, the activity of amateur fishermen (number, catch size, species composition) was monitored.

In order to effectively protect especially valuable fish species in places of their concentration (including rare and endangered species listed in the Red Book of the Altai Territory: Siberian sturgeon, taimen, sterlet, nelma, lenok), work was carried out to clarify the boundaries and coordinates of wintering pits located on the Ob within the boundaries of the Altai Territory, included in the Fishing Rules for the West Siberian Fishery Basin. After additional in-kind studies, their locations and the boundaries of the minimum protection zone will be established.
