Deputy Director - Head of the Atlantic Branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) Konstantin Bandurin and Head of the International Cooperation Department Anastasia Teplinskaya as part of the Russian delegation took part in the 7th international fisheries exhibition "Halieutis", held in Agadir (Morocco, February 5-6, 2025).

Halieutis is the largest international exhibition under the patronage of the King of Morocco Mohammed VI, dedicated to fisheries, seafood processing and aquaculture, which every two years brings together representatives of the fishing fleet, processing industry, research institutes and government organizations to explore the possibilities of finding innovative solutions, exchanging the latest achievements and setting a course for sustainable exploitation of the oceans.

The event was attended by more than 523 exhibitors from 54 countries, including new participants from South Korea, Great Britain, India and Oman. The Russian Federation also presented its national pavilion.

The VNIRO stand presented information on the progress of the Great African Expedition, as well as further plans for work in the coastal states of Africa in the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.

Since the start of the expedition, the efforts of two VNIRO vessels: STM Atlantis and STM Atlantiro have fully completed four planned surveys in the waters of three African states. Currently, the vessels are completing research work in the zones of Morocco and Guinea-Bissau.

As part of the exhibition, VNIRO specialists were able to communicate with the leadership of research institutes in Morocco, Mauritania and the Republic of Guinea.

For example, the Director General of the Research Institute for Fisheries Research of Morocco (NIRI) Abdelmalek Faraj emphasized the importance of continuing to carry out a joint survey of the replenishment of pelagic fish stocks in the Atlantic fishing zone of Morocco, as well as completing work on preparing a collection of joint articles.

Director of the Mauritanian Institute of Oceanographic Research and Fisheries (IORF) Mohamed El Hafed Ejiven expressed gratitude to the VNIRO management for the joint work carried out in the Mauritanian zone, noting that the data collected and transferred to the Mauritanian side are valuable and will undoubtedly contribute to the effective management of the ecosystems of the Mauritanian EEZ.

Deputy Director of IORF Mohamed Elmustapha Bouzouma highly appreciated the practical cooperation between VNIRO and IORF scientists during the joint surveys, noting the significant contribution of Russian scientists in terms of training and preparation of young IORF specialists who participated in the joint work on Russian research vessels, and also asked Konstantin Bandurin to accept a Mauritanian specialist to the branch for a two-week internship in the department with specialists in conducting acoustic surveys to assess marine commercial biomass in order to improve professional skills in assessing stocks using acoustic techniques.

Representatives of the National Center for Scientific Research of Boussoura (hereinafter referred to as CNSHB) also noted the invaluable contribution of joint research work in the waters of the Republic of Guinea. In the future, the data obtained will be used to assess and manage stocks. In turn, Konstantin Bandurin expressed the idea of developing and creating a joint collection of articles by scientists from the two countries based on the results of research work carried out in the waters of the Republic of Guinea. Representatives of CNSHB responded positively to the proposed idea.

National Coordinator of the Center for Networks for Sectoral Growth in Cameroon, Dr. Yonga Bakalag Simon Francois, noted the importance of conducting upcoming research work in the waters of Cameroon, especially emphasizing that such studies will allow assessing the current state of aquatic biological resources so that the Cameroonian side can rationally manage stocks and attract new investments in the industry.

In addition, Konstantin Bandurin, taking the opportunity, presented the head of the representative office of Rosrybolovstvo in Mauritania Popov V.B. a commemorative sign for participation in the preparation, organization and implementation of large-scale scientific research on aquatic biological resources of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans.
