Winter school of the "Floating University" at VNIRO

 

For all four days of the School, the organizers planned lectures, excursions and workshops, a round table with mentors and an entertaining and educational quiz for its participants – students from Russian universities.

 

The participants were told about the main areas of work and scientific research at VNIRO, as well as about the complex marine expeditions of the institute.

 

Then, future scientists visited the genetic research department, where they were able to get acquainted with the modern equipment used for research by VNIRO employees, the Far East marine fish department, where they learned how fish age is calculated, the department of Food Quality Technology from Fish, as well as a new aquarium complex.

 

This year, VNIRO, participating for the second time as a co-organizer of the event, hosted students at the Central Institute on 3 tracks:

 

"Computer tools for an ichthyologist"

"Seasonality in the ocean"

"Genetic research of aquatic biological resources"

On February 6, the "school" day of the Winter School took place, when students from not only Moscow, but also other cities, visited the VNIRO laboratory building, and then young scientists and specialists gave their lectures.

 

And on February 7, a bus ("VNIRObus") was organized for all comers for an excursion to the VNIRO Freshwater Fisheries Branch, where excursions were held to the laboratories of ichthyopathology, genetics, hydrochemistry, ecology, as well as to the library and fish breeding workshop.

 

In total, 60 students and more than 30 schoolchildren from different cities and neighboring countries took part in the events of the Winter School of the "Floating University".

"Floating University" is a scientific and educational program for students in the field of marine sciences, working on the principle of "Learning through research" and allowing university students to begin their career as an oceanographer, and organizations working in the field of marine sciences and research - to fill the personnel shortage. The training is annually held in a cycle format, and students undergo a multi-stage competitive selection, in which their future scientific supervisors actively participate.

 

The Floating University program is being implemented within the framework of the UN Decade of Ocean Sciences and is part of the Science of Winning initiative of the Decade of Science and Technology of the Russian Federation.
