The scientific expedition will take place in February-April 2022.
Pacific salmon occupy an important place in the structure of the resource base of the countries fishing in the North Pacific Ocean. The least studied period of the life cycle of Pacific salmon is the wintering period, since at this time the salmon are the most distant from the coast, and their various regional groupings are maximally mixed, which, along with severe weather conditions, complicates the process of organizing expedition research.
The expedition is included in the plan of resource research of the World ocean of the Russian Federation, as well as in the program of the VNIRO "Integrated Salmon Research in the Russian Far East in 2022-2025". In addition, the expedition will be the final project within the framework of the five-year NPAFC initiative "International Year of Salmon" (2018-2022).
A scientific group led by Alexey Somov, a specialist of the Pacific Branch of VNIRO, will study the specifics of the winter ecology of Pacific salmon in almost the entire range of their habitat. Up to five research vessels from Russia, the USA and Canada will be involved in the work..

The entire voyage will be 78 days. Upon leaving Vladivostok, «TINRO» scientific vessel will proceed to Dutch Harbor to get a part of the scientific group from the USA and Canada and equipment onboard.
