A large-scale expedition to study the Kamchatka crab starts in the Barents Sea

From June 30 to July 24, 2026, a comprehensive expedition will take place on the scientific research vessel Professor Boyko: with the support of Russian Crab JSC and Antey Sever LLC, specialists from the Polar Branch of the All‑Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) will study the Kamchatka crab in the coastal waters of the Barents Sea.

Scientists will focus on the structure of aggregations of females, juveniles, and precruts, as well as identify the features and patterns of the spatial distribution of the species. During the voyage, catch data will be collected to calculate biomass indices and estimate the abundance of both total and commercial crab stocks in the study area.

In addition, the expedition will cover related areas: experts will record oceanographic characteristics of the sea, analyze synoptic processes, collect information about bottom—dwelling fish in the work areas and about invertebrates in by-catch - all this will help to better understand the habitat of the Kamchatka crab.
