A meeting of the Far Eastern Basin Scientific and Industrial Council was held in Khabarovsk

On November 28, the Far Eastern Basin Scientific and Fisheries Council (FESC) held its regular meeting in Khabarovsk, chaired by Ilya Shestakov, head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries. The meeting summarized the results of the 2025 salmon run.

Opening the event, the head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries noted that Russian fishermen had caught 335,500 tons of Pacific salmon, and the country was fully supplied with salmon and caviar.

Pavel Storozhuk, Acting Deputy Chairman of the Khabarovsk Krai Government for Natural Resources and Agriculture, delivered a welcoming address. He emphasized the importance of strategies for organizing Pacific salmon fisheries for the regions of the Far East.

Participants at the event included representatives of the Federal Agency for Fisheries and its regional offices, specialists from the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), fisheries professionals, representatives of regional government agencies, regulatory agencies, and industry representatives.

As usual, VNIRO Director Kirill Kolonchin, Doctor of Economics, reported on the results of the salmon run in the Far East fisheries basin this year. He noted that the Pacific salmon catch this year exceeded scientists' initial forecasts and was promptly adjusted thanks to the coordinated work of regional commissions, industry researchers, and regional executive authorities.

"We promptly presented information on fisheries development at the Scientific and Federal Fisheries Headquarters, and 215 scientific recommendations were prepared for the regional commissions. A total of 33 upward adjustments were prepared for 2025," the VNIRO Director emphasized. Since the mid-2010s, Kamchatka Krai has been the undisputed leader in Pacific salmon catch volume. Khabarovsk Krai and Sakhalin Oblast rank second and third, respectively.

"In analyzing the 2024 fishing season, we examined in detail a number of parameters affecting stock status, approaches, and salmon catch dynamics. This year, the range of environmental conditions studied was expanded. Of course, our conclusions are a working hypothesis. We do not claim absolute certainty. However, our foreign colleagues attempting to solve the same problem have not yet been able to achieve similar results," noted Kirill Kolonchin in his speech.
Another important item on the agenda was the results of the 2025 Sea of Okhotsk pollock run and the forecast for 2026, a report on which was prepared by Alexey Baitaluk, Deputy Director and Head of the Pacific Branch. He presented data on the pollock population status. It is expected that the 2021 year-class, which is characterized by high abundance compared to other years, will partially reenter the commercial stock in 2026.

Furthermore, the situation with Iwashi sardine runs is expected to improve, and its harvest is expected to resume at previous levels in the coming years.

Far Eastern Scientific and Practical Council (DVNPS) participants were also presented with proposals for amendments to the Fishing Regulations for the Far Eastern Fishery Basin.
