The majority of pollock is harvested in the Far East fishery basin. The Sea of Okhotsk yielded over 570,000 tons, followed by the Bering Sea. The fishery is carried out by supertrawlers with giant nets. The Vladivostok fishing fleet has been actively modernizing in recent years, replacing older vessels with modern refrigerated vessels.
Experts emphasize that the record catch will not lead to a decline in the population. All calculations are based on mathematical models.
"We are taking a precautionary approach. The removal from the commercial portion of the population does not exceed 21-22%. This allows us to preserve the reproductive potential and ensure a stable pollock population," said Alexey Baitaluk, Deputy Director and Head of the Pacific Branch of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), in an interview with the MIR 24 television channel.
