Annual comprehensive research of the Northern Branch in the Kara Bay of the Kara Sea

The Northern Branch of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) continues its annual research in the Kara Bay of the Kara Sea.

From November 25 to December 23, branch specialists collected data on six marine fish species (saffron cod, Asian smelt, Arctic and European flounder, and Arctic cod) and eight freshwater species (omul, whitefish, broad whitefish, Siberian vendace, grayling, char, pink salmon, and burbot).

The navaga fishery in this area began in late November. The fishing grounds were favorable, with a steady fish run. Navaga aggregations were observed closer to the Kara River delta. The catches were dominated by older age groups of navaga, indicating underexploitation of this species in previous years.

Local fishermen also actively catch salmonids in the Kara River. Pink salmon spawn here as well. The area holds great potential for studying the biology and natural reproduction of salmonids.

Meteorological observations have been conducted. The data collected will be used to prepare forecast materials and develop measures to regulate fishing.
