Assessment of spawning approaches of White Sea herring in the Dvina Bay

In the period from May 28 to June 4, in the area of the Yandova Bay of the Dvinsky Bay of the White Sea, specialists of the Northern Branch of the SSC RF "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) conducted annual comprehensive studies to evaluate spawning approaches and the effectiveness of spawning of White Sea herring, including ichthyological, hydrological and hydrobiological observations.

During the work, the weather was colder and less stable compared to the same period in 2025. The air temperature ranged from +7 to +17 ° C, the water warmed up to 8 ° C.

The main catches were navaga, post-spawning smelt, White Sea herring, in addition, flounder and one specimen of whiting, which has recently often appeared in the White Sea, were noted in the catches. Herring roe has been spotted on fishing gear since May 21. Herring spawning approaches during the observation period were assessed as weak, as in 2025. Ichthyoplankton surveys were performed to assess the efficiency of herring reproduction. Zooplankton samples were also taken to analyze the state of the food supply.

All the collected data will be used to prepare forecast materials and develop measures to regulate fishing in the area, as well as to assess the habitat conditions of aquatic biological resources in the coastal part of the Dvinsky Bay of the White Sea.
