Commercial fish as a strategic resource: strengthening the country's food security

The Tyumen branch of the Russian State Research Center of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) continues to supply fish seed to commercial fisheries in Russia and neighboring countries. Last year, the institute shipped over 130 million whitefish larvae and their hybrids.

Fish seed obtained by fish farmers from the institute's own broodstock is particularly in demand in Western Siberia and the Urals. The largest number of larvae is purchased by fish hatcheries in regions with extensive lake systems—the Tyumen and Kurgan regions, as well as northern Kazakhstan. Furthermore, fish seed grown by fish farmers at the Tyumen branch of VNIRO is stocked for commercial aquaculture in the Sverdlovsk, Chelyabinsk, and Omsk regions, as well as the Altai Territory.

According to the Tyumen Region Department of Agro-Industrial Complex, fish farms in the region raised over 2,900 tons of commercial fish last year, including 741 tons of whitefish. The lion's share of this volume was obtained from the institute's seed stock.

The peled and broad whitefish hybrid, pelchir, remains the most popular fish for commercial fish farms in the Urals and Siberia. Pelnel, a relatively new, scientifically proven hybrid of peled and nelma salmon, is also gaining popularity. Peled and its hybrids, whether salted, smoked, or dried, have already become the region's signature fish. Almost all of this fish on store shelves in the Tyumen Region is raised from the branch's seed stock.

The Tyumen branch of VNIRO confidently maintains its leadership in supplying whitefish larvae to commercial fish farms, with a share of over 90%. The work of fish farmers and the research conducted by the institute's staff, including the development of new, more productive hybrids, contribute to the stable growth of commercial aquaculture, which is a significant contribution by VNIRO to ensuring the country's food security.
