Commercial invertebrates of Western Siberia in the focus of VNIRO branches

Specialists from the Tyumen and Novosibirsk branches of the All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) conducted the final studies of Artemia and Artemia cysts in lakes in the Omsk and Novosibirsk regions this year.

The expedition covered 48 bodies of water, covering a total area of 240 km². The scientists assessed the lakes' resource base: they studied the abundance and biomass of Artemia populations and examined aquatic environmental parameters (depth, temperature, salinity, water clarity, and dissolved oxygen levels).

During the monitoring, specialists noted increased water levels and decreased mineralization in most lakes. Freshwater zooplankton was also recorded in many bodies of water, along with hypersaline fauna. The data obtained by the specialists will form the basis for assessing the stock status of this valuable bioresource in the studied areas and will be used to calculate the recommended catch of commercial invertebrates.
