Completion of comprehensive bioresource research in the Barents Sea

From May 12 to 31, scientists from the Polar Branch of the All–Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO) conducted a Russian ecosystem survey in the waters of the Russian EEZ in the Barents Sea at NIS MK - 0102 Vilnius.

The objectives of the expedition were to assess the abundance and biomass of Atlantic Scandinavian herring and other pelagic fish in the research area, study oceanographic conditions, sample mesoplankton to assess its biomass and species diversity, parasitological and ichthyopathological studies of commercial fish species, collect data on the distribution of marine mammals and birds, samples of water and aquatic organisms for pollutants, biochemical analysis, sampling of water and gastrointestinal tract of pelagic fish for microplastic content.

During the voyage, the vessel covered 3,000 nautical miles, and experts collected a significant amount of data on oceanology, ichthyology, hydrobiology, parasitology and ichthyopathology, ornithology, and marine mammals.

The survey materials will be used to protect Russian interests in international fisheries management organizations and intergovernmental commissions.
