This year's All-Russian Scientific Conference was dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the birth of Viktor Fedorovich Bugaev, a renowned Russian ichthyologist, Doctor of Biological Sciences, Honorary Citizen of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, and a scientist who dedicated his entire life to working at the Kamchatka branch of VNIRO.
Many of his scientific works are widely known among specialists both within our country and abroad. The scope of Viktor Fedorovich's research allows him to be considered one of the leading ichthyologists of the second half of the 20th and early 21st centuries. He was a regular participant in the conference and served on the editorial board of the conference proceedings for many years.
Traditionally, the conference brings together leading Russian scientists studying Kamchatka's biodiversity, as well as young specialists. Participants learned about the results of their research on the peninsula's flora and fauna and surrounding marine areas, and discussed a range of issues, including the state of knowledge of individual groups of flora and fauna, the current abundance of various plant and animal species, the development of a system of specially protected natural areas, the extent of anthropogenic and technogenic impacts on the peninsula's terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, and many others.
VNIRO scientists presented a wide range of research in seven papers.
For example, E. Lepskaya discussed the "blooming" of Kamchatka's recreational marine waters. S. Gorin reported on the results of his studies of storm-related flooding in coastal villages along the Kamchatka coast. The paper summarized existing information on the mechanisms of these hazardous phenomena and proposed proposals for their further study. V. Zimina discussed the use of morphological features of the recording structures of Commander squid off the northern Kuril Islands and southwestern Kamchatka to determine population affiliation. A. Varkentin presented some results of a field experiment in the deep-water canyon of Avacha Bay. S. Kornev reported on the influence of meteorological factors on sea otter populations on the northern Kuril and Commander Islands. N. Vetsler presented a report on zooplankton studies in Lake Mikizha (southeastern Kamchatka). L. Bazarkina presented a poster presentation on the state of zooplankton in the deep-water region of Avacha Bay.
