Developing fisheries in the Caspian Sea is the main goal of the new year

At the beginning of the first working week of the year, two meetings on the development of fisheries in the Caspian Sea were held, attended by the heads and specialists of the Volga-Caspian branch of the Russian State Research Center "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO).

The first meeting on the strategy for the development of the fishing industry was chaired by Sergey Melikov, Head of the Republic of Dagestan. Representatives of federal and regional government agencies, the environmental prosecutor's office, businesses, and research organizations participated in the meeting. Sergey Melikov noted that the republic has the full support of the Russian Ministry of Economy, the prosecutor's office, and the Federal Agency for Fisheries, which, with proper development forecasting, will help include the region's fishing industry in one of the dynamically developing breakthrough projects with federal support measures.

Much attention was paid to the Arakum and Nizhnetersky spawning and nursery waters and ways to resolve the accumulated issues. As a reminder, following the clearing and deepening of the Gudiyskaya Channel in 2024-2025, sufficient Terek River water began flowing into these reservoirs for the first time in many years.

Chaired by Vasily Sokolov, Deputy Head of the Federal Agency for Fisheries, a meeting was held with representatives of businesses, regional and federal authorities, port officials, and fisheries scientists to discuss the development of coordinated proposals to improve the efficiency of fisheries in the Caspian Sea. This included organizing the efficient operation of port infrastructure facilities, a ship repair facility, aquatic biological resource processing facilities, the provision of vessel maintenance services, and the removal of administrative barriers to the harvesting, transportation, unloading, and processing of aquatic biological resources.

During the meeting, current issues related to the sprat fishery and proposals for their solutions from interested entities were discussed.

The Volga-Caspian branch of VNIRO announced the current status of Caspian sprat stocks and forecasts for their changes, and described measures aimed at increasing the efficiency of sprat fishing in the Caspian Sea.
