During the work, the specialists performed ichthyological accounting studies, collected data on the species and size‑age composition of the ichthyofauna, and selected samples for genetic and histological analyses. 16 species of fish from 9 families have been recorded in the river, from pike and perch to valuable whitefish, grayling and sturgeon. Additionally, samples were taken on hydrochemistry and hydrobiology (phyto‑ and zooplankton, zoobenthos) — a complete biomaterial was collected to assess the state of the ichthyofauna of the river.
The expedition took place within the framework of the Russian Geographical Society's Rivers of Russia project under an agreement between VNIRO and the Russian Geographical Society. Its main goal is a comprehensive study of the river to form a scenario for its sustainable economic and recreational development. The results will be posted on the GIS portal of the Russian Geographical Society: these data will help develop master plans for coastal areas, tourist routes and update environmental standards.
The Rivers of Russia project was launched in 2025 with studies of the waterways of the Nizhny Novgorod Region, Perm Krai, Khanty‑The Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug and Primorye — based on their results, model solutions have already been developed for the development of the recreational potential of the country's rivers.
