Jellyfish in the Sea of Azov: interim results of VNIRO observations

Specialists of the Southern Branch of the Scientific Research Center of the Russian Federation "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO) summed up the interim results of daily observations of the approach of jellyfish to the coast of the Sea of Azov (August 10-14). The distribution of yellow—bodied organisms remains heterogeneous - the density of their clusters varies markedly across the water area.

Jellyfish are still not recorded in the eastern part of the Taganrog Bay and in the north of the sea (in the area of the Belosaray Spit). In the southern part (Temryuk district), only a sparse concentration of jellyfish was observed in the coastal zone during the week — the situation was influenced by the north and northeast winds (3-7 m/s).

The situation on the east coast turned out to be the most dynamic. At the beginning of the week, the coastal strip in the Primorsk area of Akhtarsk was almost completely covered with jellyfish, but since the middle of the week, calm has set in — and the situation has improved markedly: the coastal zone has become clean. Individual specimens were also recorded near Yeysk (from the Taganrog Bay), but by the end of the week their presence was not observed.

Research continues: VNIRO specialists simultaneously measure the temperature of water and air, wind speed and direction, as well as the level of dissolved oxygen in the water. These data will help to understand the mechanisms of formation of jellyfish clusters and assess the influence of hydrometeorological factors on their movement.
