Lecture on the waves: Vyacheslav Bizikov told Muscovites where crabs winter in Russia

On June 15, Vyacheslav Bizikov, Deputy Director for Scientific Work at the All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography (VNIRO), Doctor of Biological Sciences, delivered an open public lecture "Where do crabs winter in Russia?".

The lecture venue was chosen as the most unusual — the popular science event unfolded right on board the regular Moscow river electric vessel Sinichka. VNIRO's lecture on water was organized as part of a popular joint educational project of the Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development of Moscow and the Russian Geographical Society (RGS).

VNIRO actively develops almost a century and a half of educational traditions, which were laid down at the dawn of the national fisheries science at the end of the 19th century, when members of the Russian Imperial Society of Fish Farmers and Fishermen gave lectures, published scientific and educational journals and held major fishing exhibitions. Russian scientists have always sought not only to study the riches of the world's oceans, but also to share this knowledge with society, increasing the general level of environmental and scientific literacy of the population.

Today, this important generational continuity is taking on new modern formats. The Institute regularly opens its doors to schoolchildren and students, holds large-scale career guidance meetings for future specialists, organizes excursions and shares its accumulated experience far beyond its walls. The access of the institute's leading scientists to modern urban sites, such as comfortable river electric vessels, was a logical and vivid continuation of this long-term work to popularize science.

During an hour-and-a-half walk along the Moskva River, passengers of the electric vessel could immerse themselves in the fascinating world of Russian hydrobiology and commercial oceanography.

Vyacheslav Aleksandrovich Bizikov spoke in an accessible and fascinating way about the key aspects of the biology, behavior and image of crabs found in the seas of our vast country, about the difficult but fascinating work of crab researchers.

Direct dialogue and live communication of VNIRO's leading scientists at such open venues are of great public importance. They allow us to tell the widest audience in simple, understandable and lively language about the invisible, but large-scale and strategically important work that the institute conducts daily to study, preserve, reproduce and rationalize the aquatic biological resources of Russia.

The innovative lecture format on environmentally friendly, silent electric water transport demonstrated an ideal example of modern urban synergy: respect for the environment, advanced fisheries science and high-quality urban education.

VNIRO plans to continue supporting such educational initiatives, opening up new horizons of knowledge for everyone who is sincerely passionate about the mysteries of the hydrosphere and the riches of our planet.

Vyacheslav Bizikov's next lecture will take place next Friday, June 19, at the Moscow Lecture Hall of the Russian Geographical Society.
