Meeting of the NAFO Scientific Council: Russian experts assessed stocks of commercial fish in the North‑West Atlantic

From the end of May to the middle of June 2026, the annual meeting of the Scientific Council of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organization (NAFO) was held in Halifax (Canada).

The forum was attended by a Russian delegation, which included representatives of the Polar Branch of the SSC RF "All-Russian Research Institute of Fisheries and Oceanography" (VNIRO): some specialists attended in person, others connected via video link.

The participants of the meeting analyzed the state of commercial fish stocks in the NAFO Regulatory Area — in the open part of the water area of the Great Newfoundland Bank and the Flamish Bank‑Cape, as well as in the economic zone of Western Greenland.

The Scientific Council has serious research plans in the near future: it is necessary to develop targets and boundary guidelines for a number of fish stocks, select analytical models that will make it possible to more accurately assess the state of the populations of flounder and cod on the Large Newfoundland Bank. In addition, experts will re-evaluate the distribution boundaries of vulnerable marine ecosystems and examine how they are affected by bottom fishing.

The recommendations developed at the meeting will form the basis for calculations of the total allowable catch of commercial species in the NAFO Regulatory Area.
